Elizabeth Lewis.Elizabeth was born in 1796 in Sweet Springs, Botetourt, Virginia. She died 09 Nov 1871 in Sweet Springs, Monroe, West Virginia. We presume here that she is the daughter of John Lewis and Mary Preston. However, her relationship to the family of John Lewis (an early settler of Augusta County) is unconfirmed. According to the 1810 Census, John Lewis, a grandson of John Lewis (the "founder") and son of William Lewis (an early settler in Sweet Springs), did have a daughter who was born about the same time as our Elizabeth. Other sources list a daughter named Elizabeth for John Lewis and Mary Preston born in 1806. The LDS Family History Library shows Elizabeth Lewis (m. Elijah Wickline) was born in 1796 although no parents were named. It is possible that Elizabeth Lewis Wickline is related to the Lewis family described in the previous paragraph; however, I have found no conclusive data thus far to support that proposition. Therefore, I include the relationship here for the sake of research only and will continue to investigate the Lewis family to determine if the relationship is valid. With so many Lewises in Alleghany and Monroe counties, as well as the frequent use of the same names, it is often hard to determine relationships. Elijah and Elizabeth were married 08 Jan 1821 and had ten children: |

John Lewis.John was the son of William Lewis and Anne Montgomery. He was born in 1758 in Augusta County, Virginia. He died in 1823 in Sweet Springs, Monroe, Virginia. John was married twice (1st) Sophonisba Thomson and (2nd) Mary Preston. John and Sophonisba were married about 1788 and had two children: (i) Eugenia Lewis, b. 1789 and (ii) Mary Sophia Lewis, b. 1790. According to A History of Monroe County, West Virginia, p. 370, "John whose wife was a daughter of Colonel William Preston, was 5"10" tall and considered the most muscular man in Virginia. He was manly, cheerful, and brave, and also kind, gentle, and frank. He fought at Point Pleasant, and entered the Revolution as a lieutenant he served with such distinction in Washington's army that at the battle of Monmouth he won the rank of major. During the ten years following that war he was much on the frontier. He succeeded his father at Sweet Springs and died here in 1823. He was an elder in the Presbyterian church. Andrew Jackson, who had known him, is reported as saying that 'if he had a man like John Lewis to second him he would go to South Carolina, hang Calhoun, and end nullification within a month.'" From A History of Augusta County, p. 290, "He was a man of great firmness, ability and patriotism … a personal friend of [General] Washington, with whom he passed the winter of 1777 at Valley Forge, and of President Jackson." |

William Lewis.William was the son of John Lewis and Margaret Lynn. He was born in Donegal, Ireland. He died in 1811/2 in Sweet Springs, Monroe, Virginia. According to A History of Monroe County, West Virginia, p. 370, "The career of William … was less striking than in the case of his brothers, yet he too was a man of talent and ability. In person he was tall, handsome, and robust. About 1783 he removed to the Sweet Springs valley and remained there the rest of his life. He had already known the spot for at least thirty years. His first home was a large two-story log house very near the mill at the Sweet Chalybeate Springs. It stood until after the middle of the last century [19th]. Subsequently, he built a stone house immediately to the rear of the site occupied by the present mansion of 'Lynnside'. Notwithstanding his controversies with the people around him, it seems clear that he sougth to establish a model residential town, which should likewise be a center of culture and education, as well as trade, and during several years it was the seat of a district court." |

John Lewis.John was the son of Andrew Lewis and Mary Calhoun. He was born 01 Feb 1678 in Donegal, Ireland. He died 28 Dec 1762 at "Bellefonte" in Staunton, Augusta, Virginia. According to A History of Monroe County, West Virginia, p. 370, "In the early settlement of this county and in the development of Old Sweet Springs the family of John Lewis stands conspicuous. Colonel John Lewis fled from Ireland to America as a refugee from English injustice, and in the summer of 1732 he settled two miles east of Stauton near the hills, 'Betsy Bell' and 'Mary Gray', which were named for hills in county Tyrone [that were] very similiar to them. He was the first permanent settler in that locality and the senior founder of the county of Augusta. His sons, Thomas, Andrew, William, and Charles, were tall, powerful men, infludential, masterful, and thrifty. All became wealthy and extensive landholders. Thomas, who lived near Port Republic in Rockingham [County], was the first surveyor of Augusta. Andrew, whose home was at Salem, is best known in American history as fighting the Indians in several wars and winning the battle of Point Pleasant. Charles, the youngest, lived on the Cowpasture River. He too was a fighter of the red men, and was killed at Point Pleasant. He was loved by those who knew him, and had he lived longer would undoubtedly have attained high rank and distinction in the Revolution. Andrew himself was considered by Washington as the best fitted to command the American armies in the struggle with England." |
