Mordecai Larcom.Mordecai was the son of William Larcom (b. abt. 1600 in Lincoln, England) and Lucy. He was born about 1629 in Isle of Wight, England. He died 04 Jun 1713 in Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts. It was not until early in the 20th century that the question of the relationship of Mordecai Larcom of Ipswich and David Larcom of Beverly has been settled beyond all question or doubt; not so much that the relationship of grandsire and grandson has been questioned, but that owing to imperfect vital records the name of Cornelius Larcom does not appear on record among the sons of Mordecai, immigrant, American ancestor and progenitor of one of our most notable old New England families. It was the lack of proof of the fact rather than the fact itself which gave rise to whatever uncertainty may have existed, but the recent discovery of an unrecorded quit-claim deed has thrown light on the subject and had the effect of dispelling any possible doubt. The instrument referred to gives important information in regard to the children of Mordecai Larcom in that it proves absolutely that Mordecai, Thomas, Daniel, Rebecca and Elizabeth Larcom were his children, and as his heirs they quit-claim to David Larcom, son of Cornelius Larcom, "it is practically conclusive that Cornelius, the ancestor of the Beverly Larcoms, was another son," although previous record evidence of the fact was wanting. Elizabeth Clarke. At this time, neither the name of Elizabeth's parents nor her date/place of birth are known. There is some conflicting information that she was the daughter of Nathaniel Stone and Remember Corning; however, I have not been able to confirm this information. One reference lists the name of Mordecai's wife as "Elizabeth [Clark] w. William; b. 25 Mar 1656; Ipswich" (New England Marriages Prior to 1700, p. 452 accessed at Ancestry.com, retreived 15 Sep 2009). Another lists Elizabeth Clarke as the wife of Mordecai Larcom (Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s to 1900s, accessed at Ancestry.com, retrieved 15 Sep 2009). Based on the dates of birth of Mordecai's children, it seems impossible that Elizabeth [Clark], widow could be their mother if the notation b. 25 Mar 1656 refers to her birth. If, however, this refers to the date the banns of marriage between Mordecai and Elizabeth were published, Elizabeth widow of William Clarke, could certainly be the mother of all of Mordecai's children except Cornelius the first born. Additional research is necessary to prove conclusively her identity. Mordecai and Elizabeth had six children: |

John Balch.John was the son of George Balch and Jane Ashford. He was born about 1577 in Bridgewater, Somersetshire, England. He was married twice (1st) Margery Lovett and (2nd) Agnes Patch, they had no children, and she survived him. He died 25 Jun 1648 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. John was the progenitor of the Balch family having emigrated with the Gorges company in the fall of 1623 first settling in Wessegusset, the deserted settlement of Mr. Weston. He later moved with Roger Conant to Cape Ann to set up a fishing industry. When that endeavor failed, the group moved to Naumkeag which later changed to Salem (which means peaceful in Hebrew). The group known as the "Old Planters" were granted by the town 1,000 acres on 25 Nov 1635 which they divided up amongst themselves as they saw fit. John built his home, which is still standing, in that portion of the grant that would become Beverly in 1636. Today the home is maintained by the Balch House Associates. Click the link for a concise history of the The Balch House. On 18 May 1631, John was made a freeman of the colony. The significance of this was that he would be allowed to vote and hold office. He was an active member in the colony, serving in positions such as jury member, selectman, assessor, supervisor of highway repairs and serving on a committee on bridge repairs. John appears to have some education as he signed his will and the inventory of his estate included several books. He along with his wife Margery were among the first members of the first church in Salem which was completed 06 Aug 1629. John Balch and the other Old Planters were upstanding, compassionate men. None of them or their descendants are known to have been among the persecutors of the Baptists, the Quakers, or the Witches, and a grandson of John Balch dared to sign a remonstrance against their persecution. Emanuel Downing.Emanuel was the son of George Downing and Dorcas Bellamy. He was born 12 Aug 1585 in St Lawrence, Ipswich, Suffolk, England. He died before 1656. Emmanuel was educated at Cambridge University, entering in Dec 1602. He became a lawyer of the Inner Temple and Attorney in the Court of Wards. He lived in the parishes of St Bridget and of St Michael, Cornhill. His first marriage was in Edinburgh, Scotland where he married Ann Ware of Dublin, Ireland. Three children were born to Emanuel and Ann: John (b.1615), Susan (b. 1617), and Mary (b. 1620). Emanuel was practicing law in Dublin, Ireland in August of 1623 when his famous son (George Downing) was born. George's mother was Lucy Winthrop, sister of John Winthrop, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Emanuel invested in most of the undertakings of his nephew, John Winthrop, Jr. (iron works, salt works, and lead mines). John Winthrop, Jr. was later the governor of Connecticut. Governor Winthrop, Sr. came to America in 1630 on the "Arbella", a mere ten years after the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Emmanuel took an interest in the colonizing efforts of his brother-in-law and nephew, but as late as 1637 he declined to move to New England because of the lack of educational opportunities for his children. Finally, in 1638, he and his wife, Lucy, came to New England on the "Thomas & Frances" and lived in Salem. He took the oath of freedom before Mr. Endicott and Mr. John Winthrop, Jr. 14 Mar 1638, and was admitted into the church 04 Nov 1638. Emanuel and Lucy's son, George, came to the Colonies with his parents as a child and was educated at Harvard College. George graduated second of nine in the first graduating class from Harvard in 1642.  He returned to England in 1645, was a spy for Cromwell, and then was appointed by Cromwell to the position of Minister to Holland. He was knighted by King Charles II in 1663. Emmanuel frequently represented Salem in the General Court. Essex county records often refer to him as "Mr." or "Esq." or sometimes "The Worshipful Emmanuell Downing". He was a Deputy of the General Court in 1639, 1640, 1641, 1643, 1644, and 1648; in 1641 he was proposed for Magistrate; in 1644 and 1649 he was Associate of the Salem Court, and recorder of deeds for Salem in 1640. In 1639, he "was granted 600 acres of land," which was laid out in 1651, "betwene Hampton and the rivers mouth of Pascataq," in New Hampshire. He also bought large tracts of land "three miles west of Salem"; five hundred acres which he later sold to John Porter. In 1648, the General Court ordered that "as Mr. Downing's farm, in the way betwen Linn & Ipswich, is a convenient place for the reliefe of travellers … Mr. Dowing's tenant shall have liberty to keepe an ordinary"; said tenant "shall live" on the farm. At the same time, Emmanuel Downing was licensed as innkeeper. Within one month of arriving Emanuel had purchased 300 acres of land in what is now Peabody, and erected a house upon it called "Groton" after the name of the English home of his wife. This house burned to the ground in 1645, and, with it a large store of gunpowder (for the use of the colony), as well as all the furnishings in the house, a loss of £ 200. He returned briefly to England in 1642 and again in 1644. In 1645 he headed a petition for the abrogation or alteration of laws against the Anabaptists; however, it was summarily rejected. He finally returned to England in 1652. In 1656 his wife Lucy gave their town residence, "with consent of Emmanuel Downing her husband", to their son-in-law Lieutenant Joseph Gardner, who had married their daughter Ann. On 04 Aug of that same year she leased her farm "Groton" to George Norton. Lucy Winthrop.Lucy was the daughter of Adam Winthrop and Anne Browne. She was born 09 Jan 1601 in St Peter's, London, England. She died 19 Apr 1679 in Westminster, Middlesex, England. Lucy was the sister of Governor John Winthrop, first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, and leader of the Winthrop Fleet. She was also the mother of Sir George Downing, Treasurer to the Crown, and namesake for Downing Street in London. Lucy accompanied her husband, Emanuel, with their family to the Colonies on the urging of her brother John. On the crossing from England, Lucy proved the ever gracious hostess to fellow passenger Rev. Edmund Browne. On 07 Sep 1638, Browne wrote home to England mentioning that Lucy had supplied his wants on the voyage "out of her treasury of provision. I was joyned in the messe with them, had an often refreshing [meal] with fresh meate and bottle beere et coeter". In 1648 she wrote to her sister-in-law, the wife of Governor Winthrop, asking for garlic and sage and to borrow a gander, for "I have 3 gooses and not a husband for them". Robert or Thomas Roberts.Robert or Thomas was born about 1617 in England. He died 19 Jul 1663 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts. At this time, the names of his parents are not known. Robert embarked 02 May 1635 aged 18 from London for Barbadoes on the ship "Alexander" with Captain Burche and Gilbert Grimes as masters. He ultimately settled in Ipswich about 1635. He is named among the soldiers paid at Ipswich 04 Dec 1643 for service in disarming Passaconaway, and had later military service. His name occurs often and favorably in the Court Papers of Essex County. It is unclear whether this Mr. Roberts who married Susan was named Robert or Thomas. Records state that Robert Roberts was married to Susan or Susanna and had several children. It is believed that she was the daughter of the first marriage of Emanuel Downing; however, the records that would confirm this have not been found.
