16.

Samuel Corning.

Samuel was the son of Richard Cornell and Mary Terry.  He was born about 1603 in Essex, England.  He died 11 Mar 1694 in Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts.

Samuel emigrated to the Colonies about 1638 with the Winthrop Fleet and settled in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts.  His name first appears among the grantees of land at Salem in 1638.  He probably brought his wife with him from England, for her maiden name does not appear in the Salem records.  He was among the first settlers of Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts.  A history of that town says:  "A prominent name was that of Samuel Corning, made Freeman on 02 Jun 1641, whose estate included lands in different parts of Beverly, and who lived at one time near the meeting house, and also near Bald Hill, where some of his descendants still reside."  Referring to old houses still standing, it mentions "the old Corning house in Montserrat, upwards of 200 years old."

Samuel was one of the most prominent citizens of Beverly.  He was colletor of rates, selectman for a number of years, and he filled other important public offices.  He was one of the founders of the First Church of Beverly in 1667.  He was familiarly known as Ensign Corning.

Samuel was married twice (1^st) to Elizabeth Huntley (see below), and (2^nd) to Elizabeth Allen (b. Jul 1634; d. 1712) on 13 Nov 1688, they had no children.
